Cats are remarkably good at adapting to wherever they are. Besides, it was a very noble thing to take it to the vet in the first place. You were just looking out for its well being, even if it couldn't understand that. The sad outcome here, really couldn't have been predicted as it was rather unlikely. You're a great person.
